The knockout stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup is the competition’s second and final stage, following the group stage. It will begin on December 3 with the round of 16 and conclude on December 18 with the final match, which will be hosted at Lusail Iconic Stadium in Lusail. The top two teams from each group (a total of sixteen) will advance to the knockout stage, where they will compete in a single-elimination competition. A third-place play-off will also be held between the two losing semi-final teams.

Format
If a match is tied after 90 minutes of normal play in the knockout stage, extra time will be played (two periods of 15 minutes each). If the score remains tied after extra time, the match will be decided by a penalty shoot-out.
